Finally india gets a symbol for its rupee denoting the strength of its economy and joined the club of symbolized countries after american dollar,british pound,european euro and japanese yen currently have their own symbols.on thursday(15th july 2010) information and broadcasting minister AMBIKA SONI announces in the cabinet and said "IT DENOTES THE ROBUSTNESS OF INDIAN ECONOMY"
The symbol was designed by D.UDAY KUMAR,who is with the department of design at IIT gowahati.He said the design is based on INDIAN TRICOLOUR.
The design seems to be evanagari "Ra" and Roman capital "R".The designer said"my design is based on Tricolour with two lines at the top and white space in between.I wanted the symbol for the rupee to represent the Indian Flag.
The need for the symbol had become necessary because of the Indian economy's rapid growth, which has propelled it to become one of the largest economies of the world.
